Getting Rid of Carpet Stains
There are a number of things to try for getting rid of carpet
stains, starting with catching them before they are stains. When
the food has just dropped or the wine just splashed, the result
is a spot, which often will only become a stain if it is not
immediately taken care of. So start early and you can avoid the
stains.
Try water first, but don't just pour it on the spot. First
remove any solids carefully, and/or blot up any liquids with
a white cotton cloth or an undyed paper towel. Then add water
a little at a time and blot it up to lift out more of the spill
or spot. Water, then blot--repeat this process until you see
no more stain transferring to the cloth or white paper towels.
If there is still some material or coloring visible in the
carpet, it is time to try other measures. Here are some of the
pages that have specific instructions for different types of
stains:

Another Alternative for Getting Rid of Carpet Stains
There is another alternative most people don't consider for
getting rid of carpet stains permanently. It is to get rid of
the carpet. There are advantages and disadvantages to carpeting,
but there is little doubt that it is easier to care for hardwood
floors than for carpeted ones. You can still have area rugs where
you want, and smaller rugs can be shook outside, so you may not
even need to own a vacuum cleaner.
Other advantages of getting rid of carpet include cost saving
over the years. Hardwood floors can last a lifetime if cared
for properly, and caring for them is usually cheaper than regular
cleaning of carpets. There are also some health benefits, both
for those who are sensitive to the fumes given off by carpet
and for the rest of us, because of the reduction in dust mites
and allergens.
This would be a radical step if it was just for the purpose
of getting rid of carpet stains, but as you can see, there are
other benefits to consider.
